Cancer Stalemate
Billions of dollars have been invested over the years in cancer research and treatment. Each month, it seems, new therapies are trumpeted. Some show promise, most fizzle quickly.

And despite this enormous effort, the number of nearly every form of cancer has increased over the last half century. Still worse: from 1930 to the present, despite the introduction of radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and immuno-therapy; despite CT and MRI scans, and all the other modern technology, mortality rates for almost every form of adult cancer has remained the same which means there has been limited or no progress in the treatment of adult cancer.

The chilling prospect remains: One of every three Americans will develop cancer, and by the year 2000, it will be 2 of 5. And more than half will die.

Time for a New Approach
Must we wait for a miracle cure? Not according to Charles B. Simone, M.D., a leading cancer specialist and researcher, and author of Cancer and Nutrition, A Ten Point Plan for Prevention and Cancer Life Extension; The Truth About Breast Health and Breast Cancer, Prescription for Healing; The Truth About Prostate Health and Prostate Cancer, Prevention and Cancer Life Extension; and HOW TO SAVE YOURSELF FROM A TERRORIST ATTACK.

Dr. Simone believes we have the knowledge and tools to achieve substantial reductions in cancer rates and significant gains in survival. What is needed is a coordinated program on what is currently known about prevention, detection, and treatment.

"I believe physicians in our country too often wind up treating the cancer rather than the whole patient," says Dr. Simone. "We have learned many things since 1980 about the role of nutrition, the immune system, the patient's mental state, and other factors in healing."

Dr. Simone is now heading a project that offers all cancer patients a better chance. He is opening a multi-functional facility dedicated to comprehensive patient care.

The ultimate goal of the Simone Center could not be more ambitious. It is to win the war on cancer. This can't be accomplished by treatment alone - not even by the discovery of the "cure." Working toward the elimination of cancer, the Center has programs in three areas:

PREVENTION. Simple changes in lifestyle can prevent many cancers. Prevention is the key to America's soaring cancer rates. At the Center people learn to modify their lifestyle using Dr. Simone's Ten Point Plan emphasizing nutrition because 60% of women's and 40% men's cancers and 75% of heart diseases are caused by nutritional factors. Dr. Simone's "A Healthy Start" program for children is ongoing.

DETECTION. Early detection is important. Comprehensive cancer screening exams are available for family members and others.

TREATMENT. All treatment options and questions are fully discussed with patients and families. The Center suggests appropriate conventional treatment: surgery, radiation, systemic therapy, hyperthermia, immunotherapy - one of which was developed by Dr. Simone, directed effector cells. Also offered are adjunctive modalities to enhance the quality of life and alternative therapies.

We attempt to augment the immune system using nutritional modification as per Dr. Simone's writings. Patients are put on a low-fat, high-fiber diet supplemented with certain vitamins and minerals. The diet is beneficial for overall well-being and may mitigate the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy. All aspects of the Ten Point Plan are be taught.

As the first program to treat the whole patient and provide support for the family, the Simone Center expects to profoundly effect and influence the way cancer is handled in America.
